Barog - The prettiest railway station in India
Barog, a picturesque and tranquil hill station, lined with oak and pine trees, is located on Shimla-Kalka (Unesco heritage ) railway line and probably the most photogenic railway station in India with its hanging planters of pink flowers and pretty as a button station building.
The Story of Barog Tunnel
Barog has an interesting and tragic tale behind its name which dates back to the early 20th century, when narrow gauge Kalka-Shimla Railway track was being constructed. An engineer, by the name of Barog was in charge for designing the tunnel near the railway station and initiated the construction, by digging the tunnel from both sides of the mountain. Due to some miscalculations, both the ends of the tunnel did not meet. As a result, a fine of Rupee 1 was slapped on Barog by the British government. Unable to bear this humiliation, Barog went for a walk in the woods with his dog, and shot himself( near the present Barog – Pinewood hotel).He was buried near the tunnel. After his name, the town came to be known as Barog.
The tunnel at Barog is the longest and straightest tunnel amidst nearly 102 tunnels on the route of the Shimla-Kalka Railway. The original tunnel remain unfinished about 1KM away. The tunnel currently in use was built under the supervision of H.S. Harrington between 1900 to 1903.
The spotlessly clean Barog station enthralls one with its Gothic influenced architecture, red tin roofs and the white and blue painted wooden station building.

The Kalka–Shimla Railway is a 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow gauge railway in North-West India travelling along a mostly mountainous route from Kalka to Shimla. It is known for breathtaking views of the hills and surrounding villages.
The Kalka–Shimla Railway was built to connect Shimla, the summer capital of India uring the British Raj, with the Indian rail system. It was constructed by the Delhi-Ambala-Kalka Railway Company commencing in 1898.
This toy train ride is one of India’s most incredible feats of engineering covering a staggering 102 tunnels, 864 bridges and 919 stunning curves.
This railway was added to the UNESCO world heritage list in July, 2008.
